Beyond the Hero

Beyond the Hero is an adult adaptation of the Quest. It is a 2 day programme providing the opportunity for each man to discover and clarify what he has to offer in the way of teaching, guiding and providing elder wisdom for youth.

“There we were, complete strangers thrown into a room during the first hours of a weekend in late February of this year. I could not have imagined at the beginning of this weekend that I would be embarking on such an inspirational journey. The love, care, compassion and camaraderie the men on the staff group showed each other and us “new men” was truly exceptional.  My journey over the course of the ‘Beyond the Hero’ weekend was powerful and intense and changed how I view myself as a man. Before the weekend I might have ridiculed the power of the relationship between a group of men standing in a circle, sharing the joys and sorrows of daily life. After the weekend I now strongly believe that were the potential change in communities to happen, the ABOB approach is one of the most creative ways I have ever come across to do it.  I feel very privileged and humbled to have been helped and facilitated to feel vulnerable, and experience uncertainty, in such a safe and trusting environment of loving and caring men.”

Michael Kerman, Clinical Director of Kids Co.

The Quest

The young men’s residential programme is called the Quest. Conceived as contemporary rites of passage for young men making the transition from boyhood to manhood, Quest is a 2- day residential workshop primarily encouraging a search for meaning, hope and compassion that seeks to provoke questions of identity and sense of purpose. The Problem

Men account for 8 out of 10 people cautioned by the police, and nearly 9 out of 10 people found guilty for indictable offences are men. Men are responsible for 97% of burglary and 92% of violence against the person.

The Causes

Our society is largely stalled at adolescence. Many adult men relish and prolong adolescence for decades. It’s tempting to blame and punish disaffected youth but a range of adolescent psychopathologies are evident in many adult men across the social spectrum.

Our Solution

How might your life have been different if, when you were a young man uncertain about something, or overwhelmed by your own emotion, there had been older men who would acknowledge your anger and confusion without advice or judgment?
